How do I find local feral cat help in my community?
If no organization or volunteer can help:
In Westchester or Putnam counties, the Simpson clinic of Briarcliff shelter will lend you a have-a-heart trap for a small reimbursable fee. You could try and enlist one or two of your friends, coworkers, or neighbors where the cats reside to help you. The Simpson clinic will most probably be able to give you tips regarding trapping ferals. The adult feral will have to be put back if you cannot keep yourself and provided food, water on a daily basis plus warm shelter or warm barn home found if cant be put back. Feral kittens should be tameable if not too old. Kittens 5-6 weeks old tame right away - at 8 weeks it takes a little longer and over 10 weeks it takes a while. The younger the kittens are, the easier to socialize. If one waits too long however, it takes months or years or sometimes they never really become socialized enough for a real home.

How To Socialize Feral Kittens
If the cats/kittens are old enough to be spayed-neutered, see the Low Cost Spay-Neuter on this website.
It cannot be stressed enough to have feral cats altered quickly, before the situation gets out of hand. Kittens as young as 4 months can get pregnant!
If the cat/s or kittens/cats are ill with an upper respiratory infection, until such time as you can trap the them, you can pick up a box of clavamox caps or drops (antibiotic) from your local vet or cat rescue and sprinkle on their food - ask your vet regarding dosage. If the cat has an abscess or mouth/teeth infection, then Antirobe usually works best. This is just a temporary measure and the cat/s or kitten?s must be brought to the vet as soon as possible. Provide them some shelter from the cold and wind. (see Outdoor Shelters on this website.)
If feral cat/s cant be put back in their original location with a caretaker, look for a responsible barn home/s or stable/s by posting ads at the various pet feed stores esp stores that carry horse supplies. Or contact Alley Cat Allies or Neighborhood cats for advice. Or Putnam Advocats (link on this website.) A feral cat has to be confined in a large cage, large dog crate (with sheet draped over top), or inescapable room with litter box and food and water at the barn for at least 4 weeks before allowing to roam or will disappear she will try to find her way back to place she originated from. If keeping the cats outside after altered after their recovery period, see Outdoor Shelters on this website.
