ASPCA ADVICE ON FINDING LOST PETS
Things To Do:
Leave food and fresh water out by your front and back doors. Most times the cat is nearby - just too scared to come out especially if it is an indoor only kitty who escaped out of the house recently.
Put articles that smell like family members in favorite outdoor spots or used litter around house.
Search at dawn, dusk, and especially late night hours when things are quiet (11 p.m.- 5 a.m.) - calling softly.
Place flyers on poles etc at intersections nearest your home. Use permanent ink. Make sure your telephone number is easily readable. Have photo if possible- or very short description. Do not clutter up flyer.
Use large fluorescent flyers (posted on every available surface 5 miles from loss point. Minimize description/photo, print.
Place flyers at all busy intersections.
Place notices in your neighbors mailbox with photo of your pet.
Place notices at your local pet food stores, vet offices, shelters, local police and state police, post offices, libraries, grocery stores, etc.
Keep on checking with shelters, vets and police
Go to shelters in person at least every other day. Also look at your town shelter.
Place free ad in your local pennysaver.
Talk to kids w/parents at all places they gather---sport/ed/rec/martial-art/seasonal. Kids see everything, don't know what is important unless someone asks them. Also talk to workers at these facilities.
Alert vets/pet stores used by people up to five miles from loss point.
CHECK: Sheds/garages, Basement Windows/skirting, ALL vacant bldgs./units in them,
Dumpsters open AND closed, Unused Vehicles for sale or not. Storm drains/pipes under driveways."
In winter, check for openings to structures etc that may be blocked with hard snow or ice, trapping the cat inside.
Give a picture and description of your cat to your mail person, UPS driver, etc and ask them to keep a lookout for your lost pet.
Ask realtors with a posted sign, or property manager, or vehicle salesperson/owner to check for a trapped pet, explain that it only takes 3-5 seconds to jump/sneak into a trunk/window/door.
Most important of all: Don't give up! Keep searching! Pets have been found months later and reunited with their owners.
